The Daily Moth 11-5-19

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth! It is Tuesday, November 5.
Ready for news? In northwest Mexico
near the U.S. border, three mothers and their
young children were killed when they were fired upon as
they traveled in a group of three vehicles on a road
to go to a wedding. At least nine died. This happened on Monday. They were dual U.S.-Mexican
citizens and members of a religious community
called La Mora in the Mexican state of Sonora. The three mothers were headed
eastwards towards Chihuahua when suspected drug cartel
gunmen fired on their vehicles, causing one of them
to explode in flames. The dead included at
least five children, the youngest being
twin 8-month-old babies. A family member said at least
seven children survived the attack after they escaped
and hid by the roadside to wait for rescue. A helicopter picked them up and
transported them to a hospital. President Trump tweeted that
the families got “caught between two vicious drug cartels, who
were shooting at each other.” He offered the U.S.’s help to
“clean out those monsters” and said it was time for Mexico
to go to war with drug cartels. Mexican President Andres Manuel
Lopez Obrador thanked Trump for his offer of help, but said
it is Mexico’s responsibility. The family’s religious
beliefs are similar to, but not affiliated with,
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A LDS-Church spokesperson told
CNN that “these [people] were members of a polygamist sect and
not members of the [LDS Church]. News reports say the shooting
could have been based on a mistaken identity of
conflicting groups in the area. Mexico is now seeing a spate of
violence from organized crime. Last month, fourteen police
officers died in an ambush in a Mexican state and then
a few days later there was a violent shootout in
Sinaloa that forced the Mexican government to
release one of El Chapo’s sons. The Trump administration
has formally notified the United Nations
that the U.S. is withdrawing from the Paris
climate agreement. There is now a one-year
waiting period before the withdrawal is complete. President Trump announced
that he wanted to withdraw in the summer of 2017. The U.S. entered
in the agreement under the Obama administration
in 2016 that brought in almost 200 countries
with goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. is now the only
country to withdraw from it. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
said they are withdrawing because of “unfair
economic burdens” and that the U.S. is already reducing
all types of emissions. A former U.S. official
in the State Department who helped to develop
the Paris Agreement, Andrew Light, said
the “United States is not cooperating with the rest
of the world on dealing with climate change.” NPR quoted a group
of scientists who said U.S. carbon emissions
rose last year. The U.S. can decide to
rejoin the Paris Agreement in the future if the Trump
administration or a different administration
decides to do so. The U.S. and China by far
are the top two CO2 emitters in the world. Captioned by
aslcaptions.com Here are three top news briefs. The first – a Colorado man,
Richard Holzer, was arrested by the FBI after
he allegedly bought inert bombs from undercover agents
in a sting operation. The FBI said he admitted
to planning to blow up a synagogue in Pueblo. The FBI said he is a white
supremacist and that he posted threatening messages
against Jewish people and Hispanic people. Federal prosecutors said
they are looking at this case as domestic terrorism. The second news –
Roger Stone, who is a political strategist
and an one-time campaign adviser to Donald Trump,
showed up in federal court in Washington, D.C.
for his criminal trial. He was indicted by former
special counsel Robert Mueller in January on charges
of lying to Congress, witness tampering,
and obstruction of justice. He pleaded not guilty
to all seven counts. ABC News reported that
jury selection is today, while opening statements
will happen tomorrow. The trial is expected
to last about two weeks. Mueller said Stone was
a go-between the Trump campaign and
Wikileaks and lied to Congress about his communications
with Wikileaks. Stone has denied
all of the charges. If he is convicted
on all counts, he faces up to
20 years in prison. The third news brief –
the Washington Nationals went to the White House
on Monday to be honored for their World Series title. Catcher Kurt Suzuki, who is an
American and was born in Hawaii, surprised the audience
and President Trump when he put on a red MAGA hat. Trump embraced him from behind. Seven out of 25 players on
the Nationals team did not attend the ceremony. Pitcher Sean Doolittle said
last week that he wouldn’t attend because of Trump’s
rhetoric and policies. I’m announcing that
“The Daily Moth” will be sending a team includes myself and
three other people to northern Italy next month to cover
the 2019 Winter Deaflympics. We are working in a partnership
with USADSF and we will provide daily recaps
of U.S. athletes’ performances and top international
performers. The opening ceremony
will be on December 12. The games will continue
until December 21. The sports are
curling, alpine skiing, cross country skiing,
snowboard, ice hockey, and chess. This is the first time chess
is a part of the Deaflympics. The U.S. will send
around 50 athletes that will play in teams
for all six sports. The games will take place
in three different locations – Chiavenna, Madesimo, and
Santa Caterina di Valfurva. Chiavenna is about
120 kilometers north of Milan and is close to
the Switzerland border. There is a nice website
dedicated to the Winter Deaflympics at
www.2019deaflympics.com. The USADSF recently released
a 108-page bulletin with many updates on USADSF –
it is available to read online and the link is
in the transcript. The Daily Moth will be offering
advertising spots that we’ll display in between
our daily updates from Italy. If you and your organization are
interested in buying ad spots, please email us at
[email protected] We’ll be providing more
updates leading up to the Winter Deaflympics. That is all for today. See you tomorrow and
