Hello everyone. Welcome to Sign1News live. I’m Crystal Cousineau. Here are your top stories for today. We want to take this time to congratulate
and encourage Sign1News anchor Jethro Wooddall. He has officially begun the journey that many
people embark on every day: the weight loss journey. Jethro says he decided it was time to take
control of his health and has set a goal of losing 50 pounds. And he’s literally doing it one step at a
time. He walks every day 1 to 2 miles
and he has also made some dietary changes like eliminating sodas. He has already lost 11 pounds. We will be sharing his progress every week
on our Sign1News platforms. And Jethro will be sharing his thoughts, challenges
and successes through short video posts. Here is his first vlog. The video is a little grainy. He recorded it with his cell phone. Hey all! I’ve been walking for the past four
days. I am walking because I want to take advantage of this for my health. I’m only in my early 30s and I need to focus
on how to accomplish that so I’m starting slowly. I started drinking more water, I stopped drinking
sodas and I also added walking because why not?! So that’s three big things I did this past
week and a half. Hey it’s something. Hurricane Dorian unleashed fury upon the Bahamas,
destroying entire islands. One of the areas that was most impacted is
known as The Mudd, a small town in Marsh Harbor in the northern Abaco Island. Local authorities are worried that many victims
may be under this rubble but they can’t determine how many. The government says recovering the bodies
will be a very difficult task. For one thing it’s impossible to even make
out where the homes were and where they stood. And government officials say many of the people
living on the island were Haitian migrants, many living there illegally so getting information
has been difficult. Canine teams have been brought in to search
for bodies. Government officials say the search will be
difficult and could take days, possibly weeks, to identify victims, further delaying an accurate
and official death toll. Check out this spectacular lighting display. The National Weather Service says more than
5,000 lightning strikes were recorded in Western Washington Saturday night. Seattle experienced its own show with more
than 200 lightning strikes in just one hour. Of course the spectacle also left many residents
in the dark. The city reported a large number of outages. The wild storm system also affected sports
fans, triggering a delay in the University of Washington football game against UC Berkeley
at the Huskey Stadium. According to the National Weather Service,
the storm system has now moved north and is making its way over to Canada. The South Carolina GOP executive committee
voted Saturday to skip the presidential primary in 2020. The move leaves an open path for President
Trump to win all of South Carolina’s delegates without competition. It reflects Trump’s strong support within
the Republican party and among its voters as he heads into his reelection campaign. Even though some Republicans have announced
their running or are considering a challenge. The South Carolina Republican Party chairman
said the move will save state taxpayers more than $1.2 million. Republican Party leaders in other states have
expressed support for skipping their presidential primaries and are expected to make it official
during the coming weeks. Former Illinois Congressman Joe Walsh, who
has announced that he will challenge Trump next year, is taking issue with South Carolina’s
move. He said he and others are going to fight South
Carolina over it and any other state that considers such a move. He said they will take legal action if necessary. Apple’s big product unveiling event is Tuesday. So what can you expect to see? Well the company will likely unveil new iPhones
but don’t expect anything 5G capable, foldable or substantially different from last year. According to reports, Apple will likely show
off three new high-end iPhones: the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone
11 to replace its XS, XS Max and XR models. The rumor mill suggests Apple Watch will also
get a refresh and updates for iPads, MacBooks and Apple TV hardware. The closely watched media event takes place
1 PM Eastern Tuesday at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. The University of Tennessee has turned a child’s
homemade T-shirt into official apparel. Take a look. It’s an exact replica of a Florida boy’s hand
sketched design that was reportedly laughed at by some of his classmates. In a Facebook post, his teacher explained
the child wanted to represent the Tennessee Volunteers during the school’s college colors
day but he didn’t have any official gear. So he took matters into his own hands by drawing
a UT on a piece of paper and pinning it to an orange T-shirt. But some students made fun of it. The teacher’s post went viral and the University
of Tennessee sent the boy a package full of swag and gear. And university officials announced it would
add the boy’s designed to its t-shirt line. A portion of the proceeds from each shirt
will be donated to the organization “Stomp Out Bullying.” And those are your top stories for today. I’m Crystal Cousineau. Thank you for watching Sign1News live. Remember to follow us on all of our social
