Hello everyone. Welcome to Sign1News live. I’m Crystal Cousineau. Here are your top stories for today. Last night federal prosecutors announced the
arrest of eighty people, mostly Nigerians, with being part of a worldwide conspiracy
that stole millions of dollars from businesses and elderly people through a variety of scams. All of the defendants will face conspiracy,
money laundering and aggravated identity theft charges. The Federal Trade Commission says the scams
have cost Americans more money than any other fraud reported to the agency last year. In 2018 alone, tens of thousands of people
were conned out of $143 million. One of the scams is the romance scam. Federal authorities say scammers are very
active on dating apps but also on social media sites. For example, many victims say the scam started
with a Facebook message. The FTC says you should become suspicious
of any online relationship if: The person wants to leave the dating site
immediately and only use personal email or messaging to contact you, the person is quick
to claim they love you, the person says they are traveling a lot or working internationally,
the person says they want to visit but don’t have the money because, for example, a business
deal went sour or the person asks for money without meeting you face-to-face. If you believe you have been a victim of a
scam, contact your local police department’s fraud division immediately. Police in California arrested 51-year-old
Chuyen Vo, charging him with the brutal stabbing death of his coworker 57-year-old Steven Shek
Keung Chan. Police say Chan was found dead in his car
in the parking lot of the campus of Cal State Fullerton early Monday morning. He had been stabbed multiple times. Surveillance video captured a man dressed
in all black running from the scene. Staff and students spent this week on edge,
thinking there was a murderer on the loose, or worse, walking around campus. However while investigating the crime scene,
police found a backpack under Chan’s car. It contained items that could be used for
an abduction: a knife, which was not used in the stabbing, along with zip ties, wigs
and other disguise materials. Authorities say those items help lead them
to Vo. He was arrested at his Huntington Beach home. Vo and Chan were coworkers but police didn’t
comment on their relationship beyond that. Now police are working to unravel why Vo wanted
to kill his coworker. The university’s president says with the arrest,
they can now begin to grieve and heal. If you are a driver for Door Dash, we have
good news. The company is making changes to its controversial
tipping policy. The delivery company was criticized for putting
customers’ tips toward covering the base pay of the drivers. Door Dash’s CEO said Thursday it is going
to increase the minimum base pay for delivery workers and all tips will be added on top
of that. Customers will also have the option to leave
tips both before and after a delivery is made. The changes are expected to roll out next
month. Well…it looks like the chicken feud is still
going on on social media. A new contender has entered the race but not
with a sandwich. KFC will debut its mac & cheese bowl featuring
fried popcorn chicken. The loaded bowls will be added to the chain’s
$5 Fill-Up menu August 26. For those who like a little spice with their
mac & cheese, there will be a Nashville hot chicken version as well. While mac & cheese is nothing new for KFC,
this version comes just weeks after Chick-fil-A added its own version of the popular side
to menus. We have amazing video showing what happened
when a good samaritan spotted a deer trapped in a soccer net in New York. The frightened deer was clearly in distress
as it thrashed around violently trying to free itself. Truck driver Todd Brush spotted the animal
in distress and stopped to help. He managed to calm the animal down long enough
to pin it down. Then he used a pocket knife to cut the entangled
net from the deer’s antlers. The rescue took several minutes but Brush’s
efforts paid off when the deer ran free. Brush even celebrated with a fist pump in
the air and a loud “Wooo!” Here’s the video. Check it out. And those are your top stories for today. Thank you for watching Sign1News live. Remember to follow us on all of our social
