Hello everyone. Welcome to Sign1News. I’m Candace Jones. Here are your top stories for today. Another member of President Trump’s cabinet
steps down. Kirstjen Nielsen resigned Sunday evening after
repeated clashes with the President over his immigration policy and after he expressed
his frustration over the situation at the southern border with Mexico. A source says Nielsen did not intend to tender
her resignation when she arrived at the White House late yesterday afternoon but she didn’t
fight to keep her job either. A senior administration official says Nielsen
was finding the situation increasingly unbearable because the President kept making unreasonable
requests over action at the southern border. Trump announced via Twitter that U.S. Customs
and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan and will take the role of acting Homeland
Security Secretary until a permanent replacement is found. Nielsen is expected to stay in the role for
at least a few more days to allow for a transition. President Trump also reportedly fired US Secret
Service director Randolph Alles. Several administration officials tell CNN
that Alles is still in his position as of now but has been asked to leave. The Secret Service director reports directly
to the Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen. One official said more firings are expected. The National Weather Service says 26 million
people could be affected by severe storms in the southeastern part of the country this
week. The states potentially affected are Georgia,
Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi and Alabama. The storms will bring damaging wind gusts,
hail and flooding risks. And another storm system is expected to bring
blizzard conditions from Colorado toward the Great Lakes. Along with this storm system, meteorologists
predict drastic waves of temperatures, ranging from 10 to 20 degrees above normal one day
to 15 to 20 degrees below normal the next. A pediatric nurse is speaking out about how
her dream of becoming a mother came true. This is Liz Smith and her now two-year-old
daughter Gisele. The pair first crossed paths in 2016 when
Smith first met Gisele at the Massachusetts hospital where she worked. Gisele was born premature to a mother who
had used drugs and the baby struggled with health issues. The child also had no visitors at the hospital
for several months. Smith says some of the nurses approached her
and told her Gisele needed a medical foster home. Smith said she never considered fostering
or adoption but when Gisele crossed her path in a stroller, the two locked eyes and that
was it. Gisele went to live with Smith in 2017. After Massachusetts terminated the parental
rights of Gisele’s biological mom and dad, Smith formally adopted the girl last October. Smith says Gisele’s health is stable and continues
to improve. If snakes give you the creeps, you may want
to look away. Florida scientists made a colossal capture
this weekend. This female Burmese python is more than 17
feet long, weighs about 140 pounds and was developing 73 eggs. A statement from the big Cypress National
Preserve says it was the largest python ever taken from the area. Most of them are between 6 and 10 feet long. The Burmese python is native to South East
Asia but in recent years the big snake has become a slithering menace in Florida. State officials say there are roughly 100,000
python swamps outside Miami and they pose a big threat to local wildlife. It looks like a Beyonce documentary may be
coming next week. Netflix tweeted a tease Sunday that simply
said “Homecoming” with some Greek letters worked in and the date April 17. Netflix has not officially confirmed it is
about Beyonce but fans were quick to point out that the singer has a fashion collection
called Homecoming and it includes Greek letters. Beyonce also has a Homecoming Scholars Award
program that benefits four historically black colleges and universities. Many are predicting the special will shine
a light on her performances at last year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The 54th annual Academy of Country Music awards
was held Sunday night in Las Vegas. Keith Urban took home the biggest prize of
the night: Entertainer of the Year. The rest of the night belong to Dan and Shay. The pair racked up multiple wins including
Song, Single and Duo of the year. Kacey Musgraves won two honors, Female Artist
and Album of the Year. Thomas Rhett won Male Artist of the Year. And Jason Aldean was present at the “Dick
Clark Artist of the Decade” award. And those are your top stories for today. I’m Candace Jones. Thank you for watching Sign1News. Remember to like us on Facebook and follow
