Expanding ASL – Christina Goudreau Collison – Faces of RIT

♪ Organic chemistry has a very unique language and that’s particularly challenging to grasp. Historically, deaf and hard-of-hearing students were always at a disadvantage, given that the organic chemistry vocabulary didn’t have dedicated ASL signs. So, I’m working with an ASLCORE team to formalize new ASL signs for organic chemistry. It’s made a dramatic difference. We’ve seen a complete one-eighty and they are having great success. Now we are studying if the same learning gains can be achieved if we teach the ASL signs to all students taking the course.
