Citizenship Bill Passed in Lok Sabha

Yesterday at 12:00am, there were a lot of arguments by the Member of Parliaments in the Lok Sabha over the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) It focusses on Indian citizenship and there were a lot of arguments. This is the amended citizenship bill. The members of parliament gave 311 votes in favor of the bill and 80 voted against it. The Bill was then passed. Amit Shah said there was no political agenda involved and the CAB provides citizenship regardless of a one’s religion. The CAB will not give citizenship to Muslims. Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis staying in India will be given Indian citizenship. Immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan will be given citizenship after seven years of residence in India. Many MPs wanted to remove the word Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan from the CAB. They said they want the law to be neutral and not about any religion. The law should be follwed as it is. However the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with a majority. Amit Shah said the law was because, there are people in different places who are persecuted because of their religion. This is why they come to India as refugees and we want to give them Indian citizenship. Many refugees asking for citizenship, in reality they are terrorists. This is the difference. Many members of parliaments have said that CAB does not give equal rights. The North-East has protested against CAB. This is because, the states have their own culture. An increase in the refugees will erase their cultural identity. They are afraid of this and are protesting. Amit Shah said in the states of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh & Nagaland refugees will not be allowed and their culture will be preserved. The Bill was passed in Lok Sabha and will now be presented in the Rajya Sabha and will be easily passed because BJP has support of many in India.
