How To Learn Sign Language

Bright Sign Glove – A glove that translates sign language

My background is in design and I specialise in digital design. I was frustrated with the softwares available and that didn’t do what I wanted it to do, so I decided to go behind the computer and learn how it works so that I can design my own software. So this is one of the things I made, I call
this a ‘Bright Sign Glove’, because it’s a ‘bright’ glove. What it does is, it translates sign-language
to text and speech in real-time to allow people with speech disabilities to communicate with
the general public without having to have an interpreter or someone to communicate on
their behalf. – (Glove): Voice. – The words you sign appear here on the screen
and then they’re spoken out through the speaker. – (Glove): Hello. – It’s a completely standalone data glove,
it works on its own without having to be dependent on any smart device, it doesn’t have to be
connected to a network. It’s continuously evolving, I’ve been working
on it almost two years now. What I’m really insistent to do is to allow
the users to upload their own gestures and not to abide by a certain library of sign-language. I always tell my students to do what you love, because when you do, no matter how many obstacles you face, you’re going to continue doing it
because you love it and you’re passionate about it and this is what happened – every
time I connect something and it doesn’t work I move on, I move on, I try something else
and I try to tackle it from different directions until it works. I do like working with people with disability
because I feel that I can make their lives easier, I can add to their day-to-day communication
and so I believe that from here I’ll be moving into assistive technology and see how else
can I add to people with disability in their daily communication and how to make everything I do accessible to everyone, affordable and just easy to use.
