How To Learn Sign Language

Breaking the Rules: Performance by Acclaimed Deaf Finnish Rapper SIGNMARK

[#music4dev]
[The World Bank] [♪ singing ♪] We have a really special guest today. This is Signmark,
who is from Finland and he is a deaf rapper. And he’s the first deaf rapper
to ever get a record deal. He’s here today with his singer Chike. They’re going to answer a few questions
about social inclusion. So how did you start in music? When did you decide that you want
to pursue music as a career? I was born deaf, in a deaf family and my parents are sign language users,
and my family. And there was one Christmas when my grandmother
who was not a signer, she’s hearing. She was in the corner,
singing Christmas carols and I was asking her
to teach me the Christmas carols. So how we did it was that I lip read her and signed the Christmas carols to my parents
who were deaf. That was the experience that gave me the start. And I first thought that translating
different kinds of artists, artists like Michael Jackson,
and Public Enemy, AC/DC, Bon Jovi— their songs I would translate into sign language. And then later when I turned 20,
and I thought this translating thing is enough now and I’m going to do my own songs instead, write my own lyrics. And from then on I’ve had
another person working with me doing the lyrics and the singing for me. Did you meet resistance, were people confused
about how that would work? Yes, I did. Sure did.
Many of them yeah. Many problems I had like my teachers
were really negative, some of my friends as well. They were negative towards my intentions and they didn’t really believe
in my music career at all. And what kind of message
are you trying to send to people? The most important message is my dream,
and holding on to your dream. Whatever you do, whatever you face, what kind of problems, changes there are, things thrown at you, do not give up your dream. I’m really excited to hear your performance and congratulations on using your celebrity as a platform for social inclusion. Really great work,
thank you so much for coming by. [♪ music ♪] [♪ music ♪] I know you hate it dont’cha,
