ASL Workshop: Communicating with the Deaf in Emergency Situations

The school of Liberal Arts and Sciences is
pleased to be working in partnership with the Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf, and the
development and delivery of this workshop. This two-day, 10 hour, interactive workshop
will introduce participants to strategies and techniques from dealing with individuals
in the deaf community and first contact emergency situations. Participants will, learn the ASL Alphabet,
Basic Sign Language for emergency situations, and communication strategies to be able to
calm, reassure, assess, obtain contact, and other necessary information. Participants will also spend time learning
about deaf culture in order to have a better understanding on how to communicate with individuals
